Feliu advices on new electricity tariff in Spain
As we will explain today, the new electricity tariff system, which was in force from June 1, 2021, implies changes to the bill.
The electricity consumption registered between 12 midnight and 8 am -both hours included- will be the cheapest of the whole day. For this reason, Spanish society is asking itself -with a touch of astonishment, indignation, resignation and mocking humor-: " it is supposed that now we'll have to charge a morning renting machine?
First part: our ten advices
1. Find a bill prior to June 2021: look for the name of your electricity supplier and call to this firm.
Once you give them your data: name, ID number, contract number and address of the supply point - sometimes they may ask for the CUPS (Universal Code of the Supply Point), which is usually on the back of the bill. If you provide this information from an old bill, the distribution company will alert you that you are not in their database. On the other hand, if you provide the data from an invoice corresponding to the correct supply point, you can go ahead and ask the following question: "how will the modifications of the new electricity tariff be transferred to the invoice from now on?". If the answer is not clear, ask again.
2. Do not renounce to the social bonus: in the case that eventually, some company offers you to change the social bonus for any other tariff, do not do it because once you have made tis change it is not possible to recover it. This would mean that you would lose state protection in the form of a regulated price that is lower than any other.
3. Use the comparator of the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC): here we attach it.
4. Adjust your electric power: pay only for what you consume.
5. Take the opportunity to check the status of your electrical installation: here we give you some tips. It is important to be proactive and prevent electrical faults. In addition, knowing how to read and interpret the information on the meter helps you to understand the bill.
6. Avoid turning on any appliance you don't need: it is important to be aware and save.
7. Concentrate your consumption on weekends: as the image of the article shows, during weekends (also on those days when there are Spanish days-off) 24 hours will be paid with chepeast tariff -that is to say.
8. Bet on self-consumption: it is time to put it into practice.
9. Learn the steps to register or cancel a supply.
10. Let us advise you to reduce the consumption of supplies.
Second part: what changes to the new bill?
Invoice not valid until May 31, 2021:
It had five sections and the hourly discrimination was not compulsory:
- Variable term
- Fixed term
- The rental of the measuring equipment
- The electricity tax 5.112%.
- VAT at the general rate of 21%.
It was only possible to contract one power.
Invoice currently in force until June 1, 2021:
It has only three sections and makes the hourly discrimination obligatory:
- "Peak" hours (most expensive tariff): between 10 am and 2 pm and from 6 pm to 10 pm.
- "Flat" (intermediate rate): from 8 to 10 a.m. from 2 to 6 p.m. and from 10 to 12 midnight.
- "Valley" hours (cheapest rate): from 24 to 8 hours and weekends.
- Electricity tax is in doubt
- Vat at the general rate of 21%
Two powers can be hired.
The CNMC will allow two free changes before May 31, 2022.
Third part: the tariff change as a trigger for a global thought
The tariff change makes it even clearer that electricity has a cost -we will not enter into controversy about the magnitude of this cost-. To reflect on this fact today we are pleased to have Josep Maria Mas from Domus Serveis who is always welcome to our blog. Mas says: "Now it may seem like science fiction, but until the 1990s to fix everyday objects, manual labor tools or machines for industrial production was an inexorable issue because the goods were less substitutable for new ones than now. In fact, in the past, repair was cheaper than replacement, and now it is usually the other way around". A use-and-fill paradigm implies more product manufacturing and, therefore, more energy consumption than in previous eras.
Indeed, it is possible to produce differently by seeking durability over obsolescence. In fact it was a reality in..1901, Since then, "the Centennialbulb" is still giving light. It is a 60 watts incandescent bulb, with a filament eight times bigger than the current ones.
Domus Serveis and Finques Feliu's commitment with the circular economy is consistent. The reason is simple: it is a virtuous circle, which without harming either the economy or welfare, is based on the paradigm: make-use-break-down-return-manufacture, without almost producing pollutants. Mr. Mas concluded: "materials are not created, they are transformed", as Einstein said about energy.
At the same time, it is necessary to value the local and proximity economy, which contains the electric consumption and saves hours and hours of transit of goods and services.
