22 Tips for not to lower your guard and enjoy your holidays

The COVID-19 no longer saturate the Intensive Care Units and everybody is eager to travel! Despite nowadays joy, it is necessary to prevent our home from being violated and looted.

a) Preventive mesuares in cyberspace:

On social media do not talk about future trips and, even less, about dates of absence: the theft begins long before the first forced door or window because the thieves are trying track our profiles on the Internet.     

b) Precautions in the common areas of the owners' community (hereinafter OC):

Do not facilitate the entrance of people alien to the CP: in case a person is not familiar to you, be cautious.

•              Regarding the person who assures to be a gas, electricity or elevator technician: he/she must have his/her credentials clearly visible. That are as follows: name, company, identification number or other documents that authorize him/her to carry out the revision. 

Try to promotes the cohesion of the PC: when we all know each other, the common surveillance of the property is incomparably easier. 

Your OC should hire a doorman or concierge strengthens the security: where there is one the OC are less vulnerable to intrusions. By the way, do you know that they are two different job profiles?  We explain it here.

Try to convince the community to protect the accesses to the building from the ground, façades and to be vigilant with the empty houses: not only doors and gates are accesses to the houses. Thus, physically fit burglars can jump between floors or climb facades. Be vigilant to empty apartments because they can be "squatted" and from there an assault can be planned. 

Ask someone you trust to catch your correspondence regularly: it is important to hide your absence.

Place the commercial correspondence outside the OC: the less strangers go through the doors, the better.

c) Precautions at your home:

Don't leave the keys at hand from the outside: being absent-minded is expensive.

When you leave you always have to adjust the shutters and lock the door with a key -both double turn-: no one can break into your house in an extremely simple way.

Do not lower the shutters completely: to do so is to convey that there is no one at home.

Make an inventory of the objects in the house before leaving: you have to write down the serial number, the brand and the model of the inventoried electronic goods. With regard to other goods, such as jewelry, you should write down the type and, if you know it, the value that a professional taxator has attributed to them.

Notice if your door or its markings have been marked: on June 17, 1972 Frank Willis uncovered the Watergate burglary when he noticed a sticker on a door. Why shouldn't today's thieves repeat similar techniques?

Don't leave a recorded message saying that you have left on a trip: any security breech makes you vulnerable.

Take out a luggage insurance: it is necessary to insure contents and continent in an adequate way:

• Contingent:  interior elements of the house that, not being linked to the structure of the building, can move... so can be stolen.
• Continent: elements of the structure of the building and some of the decoration. If the latter are very valuable, they can be the target of thieves acting on the spot.

Do not keep an excessive amount of money in your home: the less money, the less attractive is a home..

Bet on a strong bank: it is necessary to force the criminal to make a fatal mistake for him/her. Of course, never leave the password written at home.

Hire an alarm: alerting the police makes it easier for criminals to be caught in the act.

d) Precautions in the garage:

Lock the door: it is always necessary to make access difficult.

Keep electronic devices out of sight: we all think of cell phones and tablets, but GPS and SmartWatches are also out of sight. Always keep your keys in a safe place.

Do not leave any kind of tools near the parking space: they can be used to force doors or break doors.

Wait for the moment when the garage door stops completely: patience is the mother of science.

Try to encourage the placement of the car-parks in the parking lot: their placement can never be unilateral. On the contrary, it has to respect the necessary quorum of the Board of Owners and the legislation of the Spanish Data Protection Agency.
